Marjolijn Fossen (1961). In 1988 I graduated in fashion design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. For several years I worked as a knitwear designer for various fashion brands. In 1997 I launched a collection of handmade and (machine) knitted scarves. Allways interested in crafts I experimented with many textile techniques such as shibori, felting, weaving and stitching. Over the years I developed a vast archive of machine-knitted swatches and shibori pieces.

Gradually my interest moved toward textile design with the main focus on interiors. For the last 18 years I have been making surface and textile designs. My collection contains a wide range of digital designs, patterns and also handmade designs for textiles, fashion, architecture and more. In 2011/2012 I developed a range of knitted textiles for upholstery and home products at the Textiel Museum Tilburg. For Proenza Schouler I was commissoined to make a series of felted designs.

My designs have a ‘Northern European’ approach; I try to make clear, well balanced designs which look uncomplicated but are far from simple. Rhythm plays an important part in the work, both regular and irregular patterns and structures appear alongside various motifs and (hyper) geometric patterns.
My designs are used worldwide by well known brands and editors in the USA, Japan and Europe for wallcoverings, upholstery, rugs and other textiles and surfaces for the interior and fashion. (see portfolio)

Besides designing I have been making artworks in felt. After so many years experimenting I still haven't finished exploring the possibilities of that versatile and sustainable material called 'wool'.
